What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal insurance program that provides health insurance for people who are:

  • 65 and older.
  • Individuals younger than 65 who may qualify due to certain disabilities.
  • Any age with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), a type of permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.

There are four different parts to Medicare:

  • Original Medicare - Parts A & B
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)
  • Medicare Part D
Medicare Part A inpatient and hospital insurance

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is inpatient and hospital insurance.

Part A covers:

  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice care
  • Some home health care

Medicare Part B outpatient doctor and medical insurance

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is outpatient medical insurance.

Part B covers:

  • Services from a doctor
  • Outpatient care
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Preventative services
  • Some home healthcare

Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage private health insurance

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) is private overage through a health insurance company that are federally approved Medicare plans.

Part C plans combine the benefits of Part A and B into one plan and may also cover:

  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Dental, vision, and hearing coverage
  • Wellness programs and telehealth services

Medicare Part D private prescription drug insurance

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D plans provide beneficiaries with privately managed, federally approved prescription drug coverage through a health insurance company.

Medicare Part A and B don’t offer prescription drug coverage, so Part D helps to cover:

  • Manage prescription drug costs
  • Provide lower cost-sharing for in-network and preferred pharmacies

Medicare Supplement Medigap private health insurance

Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap plans, help pay for costs not covered by Original Medicare. Each plan is offered by private insurers, has the same minimum set of benefits, and varies in premium cost.

Medigap mainly helps cover deductibles and copays you’re responsible for out of your own pocket. There are eight Medigap plans new Medicare eligibles can choose from. They’re labeled by letters A, B, D, G, K, L, M, and N, and each plan letter has different coverage benefits.
